Men's NCAA swim qualifiers
Here is a link to the Minnesota Gophers page that will have Championship meet results Thursday-Saturday (to be looked at only during commercials of men's hoops).

http://www.gophersports.com/pdf7/67021.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=8400

4X defending champ Auburn, the Longhorns of UT, UA, and Stanford look to be the only serious contenders.

Last year, Auburn won with 480 points, but graduated 185 points.
Arizona was second, with 440 points, but graduated 228 points.
Stanford was third, with 362 points, and graduated just 36 points.
Texas was fourth, with 307 points, and graduated only 8 points.

Stanford returns more points (326) and more scorers (12) than any of the top 4, but Texas is close and has 2 freshmen who will score huge points.  Stanford won't get too much help from its frosh, and, of course, will be without the services of Skip Kenney, who was suspended for the rest of the: (pick one) a) season; or b) millenium.

American Record for Ben WT
in the 50 free prelims this morning in Minneapolis.  Ben scorched a 18.98 to break the old record of 19.05 set by Tom Jager back when dirt was being invented.

Cesar Cielo went 18.86 to earn the top seed moments later (not an American/NCAA/US Open/or Auburn record due to Fred Bousquet's unreal 18.76 a couple years ago).  Auburn qualifies 1/4/5/6 in the 50 free and first in the 200 Free Relay.

Stanford qualifiies 2nd in the 200 FR, a second behind Auburn.  200 IM has 8 swimmers qualify between 1:44.3 and 144.99, and unfortunately Sun is not one of them (9th).  Cass also in top 16.  Newman DQ.

Shaun Phillips top qualifier in 500 with a 4:14.  Several other studs make the finals, and 4:14 won't win tonight.  Beal and Grant make consols.

50 Free has Ben WT 2nd, with Colville and Crowe in consols.  Dunford just missed.

400 Medley Relay:  Sun/Kornfeld/Dunford/Ransom qualify 2nd behind favorite Northwestern.  Ben WT almost certainly anchor tonight, so LSJU should go at least 2 seconds faster.  Enough to win?

Auburn is running away with it...
Stanford got DQ'd in the final event, the 400-yard medley relay.  That has to hurt their chances of catching up to the Tigers.  Currently, the Cardinal are sitting in sixth place, with 100 points.  Auburn has 187 points and I would bet on them adding to their point value in the next two days.

Stanford in 6th instead of 2nd
after Day 1 of the men's NCAA championships.  After a good first day, which had the Cardinal primed to end the day in 2nd, a false start in the day's final relay relegated Stanford to 6th and effectively ended any real hope of winning the meet.

200 Free Relay:  Stanford finishes 2nd with a school record to Auburn's amazing NCAA and US Open record (averaging 18.9).  Stanford misses out on the American record because Dunford is from the UK.  Ben WT leads off with another American record!

500 Free:  Shaun Phillips finishes 2nd with 4:13.  USC Olympic medalist Jensen wins with 4:09.  Grant and Beal finish 11th and 12th.

200 IM:  Sun improves on his morning swim with the 5th fastest time of the day, but is stuck at 9th place.  Cass moves up to 12th despite swimming slower. Arizona's Ritter wins with 1:41+

50 Free:  WT, after setting the American record THREE times today (19.03, 18.98, 18.87), slows down to 19.08 and finishes in a 3-way tie for second.  Colville and Crowe finish 13th and 16th, also slower.  Auburn's Cielo wins with jaw-dropping 18.69.

Diving:  Dumais finshes 13th or so.

400 Medley Relay:  Northwestern wins in 3:04+.  Stanford, inexplicably going for the win in the race instead of the win in the meet, false starts on the back/breast exchange. 34 points gone, as the Cardinal would have finished second in a school record 3:05.00, with a false start of 0.04 seconds. Auburn 187, 121 points currently 2nd.  Stanford has 100 to end day 1.

edited to correct/add in 50 free and 400 Medley Relay.

Day 2: prelims ok

LSJU has a pair in tonight's finals in the 100 fly (BWT and Dunford), 100 breast (Kornfeld ad Newman ) and 200 free (Phillips and Grant). The 2 relays will also swim in the finals tonight.

Auburn has guys qualifying all over the place. That false start might not have ended up making any diff. But hey, it's not as if we're down 41-13 in the first half...

Re: Day 2: LSJU now in 3rd

With Day 2 in the books, LSJU has moved up to 3rd, not far behind U of A... but way behind you know who.

I almost can't bear the thought of being runner up to you know who yet again, but at most schools that would be cause for a parade.

GO Cardinal!!

Stanford up to 3rd; sets American record
Stanford had a pretty good day.

200 Medley Relay gets second behind Auburn's sprint corps, benefitting from a 3DQ race.

400 IM:  no points

200 free:  Phillips and Grant swim well, in the low 1:34's. Beal is top 16. Arizona dominates, with 4 swims in the top 8.

100 Fly:  Ben WT is 2nd behind Arizona's Subirats record 44.56, and Dunford is 7th.

100 Breast:  Kornfeld 2nd, Kass 5th, Newman 10th behind NW Alexandrov record 51.69.

100 Back:  Subirats doubles up with #2 swim all-time.  no Cardinal points.

800 Free Relay:  Arizona dominates with NCAA/US Open record 6:14 (avg 1:33.5).  Stanford 3rd with American record 7:17.9

Auburn in 1st with a 100 point lead, UA 2nd 278, Stanford 3rd 261.

Day 3 prelims
Stanford qualifies 7 swimmers for the final evening of competition.

100 Free:  Ben WT leads qualifying.  Dunford is 14th.  Crowe out of the money

200 Back:  Sun 4th.  Grant ootm.

200 Fly:  Sun top 8.  Beal ootm.

200 Breast:  Kass 3rd, Kornfeld 4th, Ash 10th.  American record holder from 100 DQ'd.

1650 free:  timed finals this afternoon.  hopefully the distance crew scores some points.

400 Free Relay:  Stanford qualifies 6th w/o Ben.  will pick up at least 1.5 seconds.  Auburn would have to be the prohibitive favorite in this event with the way they have been swimming.

Stanford could pass Arizona and finish second with good swims tonight.  Auburn could come down with food poisoning and still win.

Day 3 Finals Theme: Card 2nd
and 2nd and 2nd and 2nd and 2nd. . . .and 3rd

To begin the evening, Auburn clinches the meet by walking on to the deck.

1650:  Phillips runnerup to $c's Jensen, who misses AR by 0.08.

100 Free:  WT gets 3rd silver, again to Auburn's Brazilian Cielo, who wins in 41.17!!!!

200 Back:  Sun runnerup to 2nd fastest ever.

200 Breast:  Kass silvers behind 3rd fastest ever, with Kornfeld bronze and Ash 11th.  Cardinal pass Arizona to move into, wait for it, 2nd place in the team race, 8000 points behind Auburn.

200 Fly:  Cal wins an event.  Stanford somehow manages not to get 2nd.  Sun finishes 6th or so.

Platform Diving:  Cielo wins his 12th event of the meet.  Oh wait, it was an Auburn diver.

400 Free Relay:  Auburn, to nobody's surprise, sets a NCAA/US Open record with 4 ridiculously fast legs, highlighted by Cielo's 40.7 split.  Arizona 2nd, NW bronze, Stanford 4th.

Stanford finishes 2nd in the team race.  The 34 points lost to the 400 Medley DQ end up being inconsequential, except for the potential school record in the suspect media guide.  Senior point scorers Ben Wildman-Tobriner, Shaun Phillips, Andy Grant, Hongzhe Sun and Matt Crowe conclude their Cardinal careers.  That is an enormous amount of points to replace for next year.  Distance ace LaTourrette is coming to replace Phillips,   another breaststroker/IM'er in Criste, and some flyer/backstrokers from Ohio, unless they are scared off by the potential loss of Skip.  We'll be able to use them all if they show up.
