"A Time For Reflecting................."

Edited by Author at 12/9/2006 - 10:36 a.m.
  • ...here is where we are.

First, Cecil Hurt is correct - do not panic. Yes, rejection hurts and it is embarassing. But, reacting to that rejection in a panic is absolutely wrong way to go.

Second, we need to wait a month if necessary to get our coach. We have 10 recruits that will be here no matter what. We can give a new coach a month to get the rest or better replacements. The right hire is key. A panic hire now will tube recruiting as badly as waiting. Furthermore, this is a small class anyway. The long term impact of a poor hire will be worse than the loss of 6-7 recruits (see DuBose).

Third, yesterday points out the incredible problems in our athletic department. Certain people made power plays on Mal to force the RR hire - out of fear of losing their jobs or not getting a promotion that was never coming anyway. They used the press and other decision makers to coerce the offer to RR. Then they leaked it to the press when it was far from done.

While Mal isn't fully to blame for how all this went down, those people who drove us here are his employees. They should have been fired on the spot for insubordination - but a dozen people in the AD should have been gone years ago for the same reason. The time has come when this is over for a total housecleaning with a mean $OB at the helm.

Fourth, our BOT members need to quit meddling in this process (no matter which candidate they are for) and sign a record check and approve a long term contract for a big time hire. Anything less says we want cheapness and mediocrity.

Finally, to all folks who really know something about this process and potential hires (you know who you are) - STOP POSTING EVERYTHING YOU HEAR. Let's go radio silent for a few weeks. The press is being driven by this board in large part. They read it all the time, figure out who is credible, and then know who to focus on and bother about the job. Not all the press is driven here, but rumors start here, and if they have any validity they catch fire and prematurely run people off by focusing too much attention, too quickly on them Relax and talk to your inner circle of friends rather than telling everyone with a credit card and 48 dollars on their limit.

    • Power plays "forcing" the AD to make hires and some of the other stuff alluded to doesn't support this idea about Witt being large, in charge, and doing this thing the right way. Some disturbing things in your post.
    • No, you're right. I will do my part....G
    • It will be a travesty if Saban or SOS would coach here but we get neither because we have people not acting in the best interest of Bama football among our leadership.

...there are numerous folks that don't care about winning as long as they keep their access pass to the Department.
    • by many folks who put their personal agenda & lust for power above whatz best for the Bama program. But the question is, what can actually be done about it? And it's completely useless to just say, "Fahr 'em all!" because this simply can't be done.

Even if Dr. Witt & a few of the BOT's knew *exactly* who the key problems are, what could they do about it? One of the reasons why useless bureaucrats love entrenched public institutions so much is that there are so many conflicting laws that protect the highly incompetent that it's just about impossible to do anything about them. The usual method is to just "kick them upstairs" with a meaningless promotion in order to get them out of the way. But this doesn't seem possible with some of the folks who are causing a major part of the trouble.

So, I'd be very interested to learn, if possible, what genuinely effective means Dr. Witt, Potera, etc. have at their disposal to finally put an end to the endless in-house political games that have hamstrung the AD for so long. These types of ridiculous problems have a very long history, and it's going to take some shrewd & savvy manuevers to finally make the Bama AD a smooth running operation & one that any potential coach would love to be associated with.

This kind of thing is never easy, and it happens all the time in corporations. But unless somebody can effectively "clean house" in a manner that will greatly improve how things are handled down there, the usual turf wars will only continue.

      Thanks for your thoughts & RTR . . .

    • ... going a month hearing next to nothing about our next HC if the end results met my hopes and expectations ... a so-called 'A list' coach with a history of winning championships at the college or pro level.
    • are the ones damaging the University. The time for hints on these people is over. They need to be exposed.
    • Do you think the guys you referred to as "know(ing) something about this process and potential hires" actually were asked to post the information?

My theory (from my posterior) is that our friends with good sources knew the eventual end of the Saban hire would get thwarted by those scared of having their power/job relinquished and put the info out to the masses. They did this so that when it happened, an outcry for these guys heads might result in some good coming from another failed coaching search.

No matter what really happens, I believe that Mal is a good person (like Shula) who is not performing in his job. You can't be buddies with your subordinates and if he is unwilling to fire those with selfish intentions, he needs to "resign" as the AD.

      • Mal is a fine man... Xen Scott 2006-12-09 09:21:25
...there are a complex set of events that made him the AD in the first place - and make no mistake because of the Sorensen regime we needed him there.

But he was a career assistant coach - not a head man who was cut out to manage a large organization. He is a good fundraiser because everyone likes him, he is affable, and frankly a man of his word.

But he also tends to tell people in his charge what they want to hear and people tend to be left to pursue their own agendas without fear of reprecussion

It's time to clean this mess up. He has earned a happy retirement and I think it is coming soon.

    • I don't know who you are, but I hope you have their ear down there.

I say lets go radio silent too, enjoy Christmas, let the folks in charge do their job, and then wake up to a kick ass hire. Which was made on "4th and goal with 1 second left" so to speak.

i've said much the same, not quite so well. However, urging discretion on the indiscrete is futile.
    • You are right on about recruiting. We can move over any scholarships to nexts years recruiting. Meyer did that at UF his 1st year. In regards to keeping quiet, my concern is that if we do, the same crap will happen. The only way I see getting rid of them is to do it publicaly & as well as have our BOT tempered, so they want screw up things again. No one in T-town seems to have the stones to get rid of them. Anyway, nice post.

I agree. While there is something to report that would be positive I think silence may be golden . Good advice
    • he has the authority to clean house as mentioned?
    • Also, the BOT members that power played should be kicked off the Board!
      • I have no idea... Xen Scott 2006-12-09 09:14:09
...but time is our now our ally - not our enemy. The NFL may have several good coaches available at year's end. Most of the college vacancies of any note are now filled. We aren't competing now for college guys. They will still be there in three weeks. Remain calm is the rule now.
    • have to die off before it gets better.

Coaching Search (PE Bama this is for you)Reply

and I know I am going to piss some people off (especially some people that share information with me), but damnit, it needs to be said.

- There are certain people within our infrastructure whom continue to hinder our efforts to reel in a good coach. FFinus Gaston and Chris King (yep, I am calling you out). I will not go into sepcifics as to why at this point, but they are the reason we are where we are.
- Many of you know I was one of the "wise-men" whatever you want to call them that has been indicating Saban would be the next HC. Well, I felt with 110% certainty that he would be and never wavered. Unfortunately, the "infrastructure" nixed this deal because they "knew" that RichRod was a bird in hand and would not make the demands that Saban was calling for (and were warranted in my opinion). If we simply do what Saban asked, he would be our next head coach. But No - we simply decided to go for Rod because he was interested and did not demand that the "Infrastructure" be re-examined.
- Well, we have been burnt, men. I am as down and as disappointed as a'Bama supporter and Alumni as I ever have been. I do not make it my practice to post BS on this board and would never have stuck my neck out there if I did not believe it would happen.
- Now, to where we are going - I do not think (hold your laughter) that the bridge with Saban has been burned, if we give into his demands of getting rid of some dead weight within the athletic department. If we agree to this, Saban will be at Alabama.

Well, now that I have posted this I feel better, but speaking of burning bridges, I think I have done just that and my phone will be ringing off the hook soon, but there you go.
Hope this helps and, as always,
Roll Tide
