November 30, 2006
(Gainesville) - University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow today withdrew his name from consideration for the head coaching vacancy at the University of Alabama.
"While I am certainly flattered that Alabama would consider me, my primary focus is on preparing for the SEC Championship Game this Saturday", Tebow said, in a hastily-called press conference.
University of Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer echoed Tebow's statement. "We are all proud of the record Tim has established here at Florida, but we feel it best he finish out his freshman season before entertaining thoughts of coaching at the next level", said Meyer.
On Wednesday, University of Alabama officials formally contacted the University of Florida, seeking permission to meet with Tebow. The request was refused after Florida legal counsel determined that Tebow was still a minor, and that accepting the position of head coach at Alabama might compromise his eligibility under NCAA bylaws.
Rumors that Alabama might seek Tebow began circulating on the internet over the weekend, and sources within the Alabama Athletic Department indicated that the University was prepared to offer Tebow a five-year, six-figure trust fund, effective upon his attaining the age of twenty-one years.
