"Florida-Auburn Tailgate Report"

(EDITED BY ADMIN: 10/18/2006 - 9:30 a.m.)

http://mudlizard.com/swamp/display.pl?page=1=read=1112864 says: No dead horses to beat here. I have gone from disappointment after the game, to outright pi**ed-off-ness after watching the game back home on Tivo, to just dealing with it and enjoying the flood of photos coming my way. So now it’s time for my observations. Memorable moments from a tailgate that was two years in the making: Above all else, I loves me my Auburn boys. I’d met aubie in bham and war damn stu (don’t those chirren learn capitalization at Orbren?) before, but now had the opportunity to meet Mr. aubie, Roll Todd, New Jersey Gary, and another barner soon to find his way to MudDuck. Guys, you all worked your tiger tails off to make the weekend work. It was everything that I’d hoped that it would be. Thank you! The Sunday recovery party in Atlanta was just what we needed, too. Got to meet UFNY, BBG, Blue, their friend, and weagle, and was in awe of their ability to find our Tailgate of Fabulousness waaaay out near the agricultural research facility (was this the barn or what?). Not only that, they found their way back after the game (I think weagle was celebratin too hard to find us)! Sorry that I only got to see weagle and ChipolaGator briefly. They are both class acts. Also sorry that I missed JimG8R’s email. I owe you a cocktail, bub. And war damn stu owes you a burger. UFNY: I am so sorry that you had to survive our Fire Island disco music. We actually thought that it would help you find us. Next time we’ll put a rainbow beacon in the air, Batman-style. And a disco ball. I’m confident that the food is so good and the drink so plentiful, it won’t skeer off the disco-challenged. It sure didn’t this time. J I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again…and again: Auburn knows how to treat its guests. As a Gator Band member, I’ve traveled to quite a few SEC spots, but I’ve never been treated as well as a visitor as I did this weekend at Auburn. Yes, there were a few less-than-courteous fans - on both sides – but they were not the norm. I hope that we treat AU as well next year. I also hope we kick their striped kitty tails back to the barn where they belong. Semper, your (bourbon) balls are safe. I couldn’t make the right recipe. Doesn’t mean that every living relative that I know won’t be getting some for the holidays, though. COMPLAINT TIME – I’ll limit it to one: How Auburn treats its band. Folks, you have a Sudler Award-winning marching band of over 300 musicians. These kids do pre-game entertainment all weekend long. They perform at tailgates and in small groups before marching in to the stadium in a coordinated way to form one awesome presence. It takes a helluva lot of work to keep up the energy without sacrificing musicial quality, yet they are still precise, visually effective, and fun to watch. It's nothing new: this has been the case for decades. So why do you feel it necessary to blare out music over the band at games? Not only do you drown them out, but you transform the beautifully traditional game-day atmosphere into prerecorded cacophony. U. of Miami does that. They have to. Their band suxes. And you do it with really crappy music that I haven’t heard since being a teenager on Panama City Beach. It’s not unintentional, either. You were trying to create additional noise with the mikes and speakers. WHILE the band was playing. WHILE the Gators had the ball. But good gawd, no, not when your team had the ball. You should have more confidence in the sophistication of your fans and your band to know when to make noise, how loud, for how long, and when to stop. I’m shocked that the refs didn’t call the amped sound as a penalty during the game. Back in my day, you whippersnappers, bands NEVER played when the ball was in play – regardless of who had the ball (exception: percussion is permitted to do so, hence the effectiveness of the F$U "massacre" cheer). I had told Mrs. GJ repeatedly that she was in for “a treat” to see the Auburn Band perform. We were both disappointed, but it wasn’t the band's fault. It was the administration's. Word to the AU athletic administrators: Respect the Auburn Band. They rock. ALL IN ALL, A good time was had by all. I truly feel blessed to know such quality people of all shades of orange and blue. Mrs. GJ refers to my sports bulletin board friends as my “Imaginary Friends.” As she has gotten to meet them, though, she has asked “When are we going to see them again?” That, my friends, is SEC Football. ADDENDUM: after the game, I was dejected, but trying to put on a good face. But I'm not above pity. So I strayed over to a group of random Barners and said, "This loss has driven me to drink. Can you help a Poor Ole Gator?" A gentleman handed me an icy cold beer. I gratefully accepted it, but drew upon my Southern politeness to ask, "Do you have anything...stronger?" The gentleman retrieved the beer, handed me a go-cup, pulled out a huge bottle of JD and said, "Honey, you say when." The walk back to the ag facililty was so much nicer. Go Gators. Admin. Edit.
