Fallacies Concerning the Auburn - LSU game of 2006

Fallacy Number 1: LSU got hosed on the 4th down play where pass interference was called. LSU DID NOT get screwed on this 4th down call. It was the correct call! There is irrefutable video and statutory evidence to make this argument.

1. The Rule Book clearly outlines that a ball must be catchable for pass interference to be called.
http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/2006/2006_football_rules.pdf

Rule 7 Article 9
c. Defensive players legally may contact opponents who have crossed the neutral zone if the opponents are not in a position to receive a catchable forward pass.
1. Those infractions that occur during a down when a forward pass crosses the neutral zone are pass interference infractions only if the receiver had the opportunity to receive a catchable forward pass.
The comments of the Head Ref of the SEC concerning this matter . . .
http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/sports/11586577214840.xml&coll=3
"It was more than a tip, it was a deflection of the ball," Redding told the Associated Press. "A key part of the pass interference rule is whether or not the pass is uncatchable."
Now there is no making this up on the field. There is no conspiracy against LSU. The rule has been in place for a very long time. It was clearly in the rulebook before the season. The head ref is simply stating a fact as it is outlined in the rulebook.

2. The video and photographic evidence clearly shows the receiver had no chance to catch the deflected ball.

An LSU person, hoping to convince people that they got screwed, has put up a nice series of pictures.
http://www.wilddogdigital.com/Auburn2006/index.htm

There is also a nice video that makes the same point . . .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESgoMBi6d3g

It is clear from photographs 006.jpg and 007.jpg that the receiver was indeed contacted by Auburn defender #38 before the ball arrived.

It is also clear from these photographs that the receiver was running down the field and jumped in the air to catch the ball. Photograph 007.jpg is conclusive proof that the receiver was in the air at the very moment the ball is being deflected.

Now unless LSU receivers have the ability to suspend the laws of physics the only reasonable conclusion is that the ball was UNCATCHABLE. The second Auburn defender clearly knocks the ball away to the right such that there is no way in hell the LSU receiver could catch the ball.

As is clearly outlined in the rules . . . if the ball is not catchable then there is NO PASS INTERFERENCE!

Fallacy #2: Auburn got all the calls in the game.

Stubby put together clear and convincing video evidence that this is utter bull#badword#!

If Auburn scores on this play, we are up 14-3 and the game is OVER!!!

So as OFFICIAL BOARD POLICY this matter is OVER! Auburn fans who keep saying it was pass interference . . . you are clearly WRONG! LSU fans who keep crying about it . . . SHUT THE #badword# UP!

OFFICIAL SCORE

Auburn 7 LSU 3
