of communicating is directly to us. Problem is, we're spiritually deaf, mostly. But, I believe God speaks directly to people all the time. Maybe not in a burning bush or anything like that.
God speaks to me through beauty. Through the still small voice. Through meditation on Scriptures. Through music. Through art, etc.
I believe that, ultimately, the Bible is an inferior form of communication because it is based on language. Language is imprecise, and it cannot remotely convey God to us. The best it can do is hint at God. When God speaks, I don't think it is with words. God is beyond words. Ultimately, the Person of Christ is the Word - the communication from God to us that supercedes all others. Whatever I hear from God, I hear through His Word, and ultimately, it is God's Word (Christ) that opens up spiritual ears that are deaf and spiritual eyes that are blind so that we can see the brilliance of God that is always there.
If someone said they heard from God, we might question their mental health, but in doing so, we'd be inconsistent. How many times do we describe great artists and musical geniuses as "inspired"? What about in science? Are there not moments of "inspiration"? What about in any walk of life? Is there not "inspiration" everywhere? What does "inspiration" mean? Does it not connote a "hearing from God"?
I think God spoke to Einstein. I think God spoke to Bach. I think God spoke to Rembrandt. I think God speaks to everybody.
