Quick note on Pat Dye's luncheon talk today at the Huntsville Marriott as the keynote speaker for the 2006 Boy Scout Eagle Leadership Luncheon...
Early on, while he was breaking in the crowd with some some funny tales and memories from his coaching career, he stopped for a moment and asked how many fans in attendance were Alabama fans....maybe 35%-40% of the crowd raised their hands...the rest were clearly Auburn fans...
He mentioned Shula's new contract and said that he thought it was deserved...went on to say he thought Mikey was doing a good job rebuilding the program and putting a good base underneath it. He said that Auburn and Alabama fans should not put too much "stock" into his 3 year record as he's been coaching with one leg or hand tied behind him...Bama fans were beginning to smile and Auburn fans were beginning to shift a little uncomfortably in their seats, not sure where Pat was going with this...
He said that Mike would get Alabama back to where most of them wanted to be or expected to be and there was a scattering of applause and a lot of smiles from some of the Bama fans and some anxious looks on the faces of some Auburn fans...
Then, he said, "But they ain't never goin' back to way it WAS! And do you know why?!?!?! Because Auburn ain't NEVER goin' back to the way they WAS!!!!"
