To the editor:
Being a black woman and fed up with immigrants that think they ought to have a free ride, I want to remind the U.S. how I paid for my freedom, which I have not achieved.
I want to remind you that I did not ask to come to this country, yet you brought me, sold me, raped me, whipped me and I had your babies; you gave me very little to build my hope on.
When I fought for my freedom, you jailed me, turned the hose on me, put the dogs on me, put me in jail, killed my children in a church fire and killed people that worked with me. Riding alone, you shot us and, not too long ago, you tied one of us to a truck and pulled his body up and down the road.
Never once did you say to me that I worked hard although I had to clear your land where you built your plantation, took care of your children while mine were at home with their aunt or grandmother or someone; I cooked your meals, sometimes you paid me and then again you beat me out of my money because I could not read. (Oh come on, it happened -- you know it did.)
I came off the plantation paying taxes; I have paid from the first day I arrived.
When I go to another country, I get someone to speak for me; but you come here, use the money that I have paid in taxes to educate your children and you pay no taxes. Why do you think you should send your money to your country and live here free? No, no -- a thousand times no. If I owe the government, I have to pay. You owe the IRS, so guess what you pay? You are no better than I am, so pay.
You knew you were doing wrong when you crossed the border. Now, if you don't want to pay, do the right thing: go back, learn English and come back the right way.
Yes, I sound like I am angry; I am, and I am fed up at everyone getting a break but the blacks. You act as if I am not a person. Oh yes, we have Miss Rice, and I think a lot of her, but lets face it, she is there to fool blacks to become Republicans. Oprah is great, for she, too, has paid her way. But how many will we have that turn out to be like her? Most are like me, just working hard, two jobs, paying high prices just for the things we need, not the things we want. I live in a home that is run down -- can't even get the money to fix it up, but yet I pay and pay. And remember, I vote.
