"Yes, Unbridled Optimism Seems only Reasonable"

Those red zone problems may appear to be beyond repair, but I am sure one day the Rebels will actually launch a field goal attempt that is not blocked.

When you were squatting here two years ago telling us it was really an honor to lose to Ole Miss and Eli and assuring us that it was a taste we would have to acquire for the future (rather than a very temporary thing, as some here suggested), one of your main arguments was that Spurlock was going to be a superstar. I take it you are softening on that position. Or were you under the impression that Cut would be switching to the single wing for 2004 and beyond. Perhaps that explains his firing. You really thought he was going to embrace the old ways.

Congrats on covering the spread for the second consecutive time in conference play. That's really good, by damn.

::::> After watching the tape of the game, yesterday wasn't a case of woulda, coulda, shoulda. It was strictly shoulda. Our defense fought and battled and fought some more. Our patched-up offensive line held its own against Bama's HUGE defensive front -- not allowing a sack for the first time this season in its best performance in recent games. Both those units deserved better! We showed some improvement in sustaining some drives, but we just didn't finish. It's tough when you know the other team isn't stopping you -- you're stopping yourself. Consecutive delay of game penalties inside the 10-freakin'-yard-line? Are you serious? Coach O's right: We're not that far from establishing ourselves as a player among the conference's "big boys." Ole Miss played well enough to beat sixth-ranked Alabama but lost, and in the end that's all that matters. As Coach O said: "There's no such thing as a moral victory in my mind." To his credit, Brodie Croyle led an against-the-clock game-winning drive to set up the Tide's game-winning field goal. Every time it seemed we had them stopped, Croyle stepped up and made a play. (Unlike our SENIOR quarterback. Yes, he's a good kid. Yes, I'm glad he came to Ole Miss. Yes, he's playing with a broken finger on his non-throwing hand, yada, yada, yada. He soulda been moved to flanker or cornerback by Cutcliffe early on -- he's no freakin' Tee Martin for crying out loud). Croyle was outstanding, especially when the Tide needed him to be -- a 20-yard scramble on third-and-9, a 7-yard completion to Matt Miller on a third-and-2 three plays later, then gaining two yards on a third-and-1. Here's hoping we find us a leader like that under center next season. If there's a better college linebacker than Patrick Willis, No. 49 -- the guy with a club for a hand -- these eyes haven't seen him. Saturday inside Vaught-Hemingway was a kinda Twilight Zone experience -- it felt like an exact replay of the LSU game in 2003 (except then we HAD a SENIOR quarterback). Coach O's program took a step forward Saturday, but not nearly as big a step as it shoulda.
