"Back from The Frozen Tundra (also a recipe post)"

(EDITED BY AUTHOR: 10/5/2004 - 10:22 a.m.) Just got back from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Was a wonderful experience sitting in the most hallowed stadium in professional football. Without Brett Favre, the Packers look like crap. Now, onto the important stuff....comparing tailgates. You can't compare the Packer experience to anything you see in college football. Nor can you compare it to most pro football teams. That's because you get the feeling you're at a high school game, a game where the whole town turns out to root their boys to victory. There are regular neighborhoods right next door to the stadium, and although they charge $10-20 to park in their yard, it's $10-20 well spent. There isn't one obnoxious jerk in the place. Everybody is drinking beer and eating bratwurst. Oh, did I say bratwurst? There was Brats fixed every which way you could fix a brat. Here's a good web site for those of you who want to make your own brats: http://www.sausagemakers.com/ This is the recipe that the guys we tailgated with used: -Buy Usinger Brats from Mars Cheese Castle in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Usinger brats are hand-made. -Simmer said brats in beer and onions for 30-45 minutes, or until the skin turns gray and the ends start unraveling. -Grill brats 15-20 minutes, depending on how hot you have the grill. -Put on hoagie bun. Add sauerkraut if you want. To whet your appetite until the brats are ready, don't forget Mars soft cheddar cheese over a Ritz cracker. Or, some Usingers summer sausage and colby cheese on a Ritz cracker. To order the brats and cheese, go to http://www.marscheese.com/ Is it better than the SEC tailgate? yes and no. The fans seem much more innocent, not nearly as obnoxious as, say, Raider fans. However, I didn't see ONE generator, satellite dish, and 25" TV set up to watch games like you see around here. Also, everybody cleared out after the game, as opposed to the SEC tradition of hanging out until well after midnight and the traffic has died down (this can be explained by the NFL games being on Sunday and folks having to go to work). The Lambeau experience was unusual for one thing-the fans rarely stood up. It wasn't like they were quiet and sitting on their hands...it was simply because the Packer fans were so doggone polite they didn't want to obstruct anyone's view. They were plenty loud. They didn't stand up until the Pack made a good play (except for one play at the goal line). Overall, it was a great experience and one all of you should try at least once in your life.
