"Do you have to be a tool to post this message?"

(EDITED BY AUTHOR: 5/23/2004 - 1:14 a.m.)

13 hours ago I came online and read this for the first time. Now I come online again and read it for the second time. The first time I thought you were a tool. Now I'm certain. Yes, you're a good person becuase you realise the value of relationships, human dignity, etc, etc. Thanks for posting it here on Wayne's. You've discovered a covert way to tell US that YOU'RE a "good person". I was unable to come up with a way to tell you that you suck, and that you're a tool, so here goes: You suck, you're a tool.

About ten years ago I remember I was standing at the xerox machine in the main office there in the Old chemistry Building on the Ole Miss Campus when one of the well groomed young grad students who was on the work study program began to brag and make small talk. I mentioned that money wasn’t everything in life and that one does not judge the success or failure of a person’s life on how much wealth that person has accumulated ( in my mind I had flashes of everything from families torn apart by jealousy to parents being ripped apart by inexplicably ill children to children having lost parents at an early age to children having been abandoned and on and on)...The young grad student who up until that moment I had respected...very seriously looked at me and asked....”what else is there?” I very calmly replied, “ Since most of the worlds’ people live in poverty every day - there must be things that they consider living a good and successful life - things like - always being there for your friends in times of need - or honoring your commitments- or always trying to live life in a way that does not take advantage of anyone” - many of these things that are important to average people do not require money in order to achieve. But I swear to God this young man just looked me with this perplexed look as if this was the first time he had ever heard of such a thing. My friends, I am afraid that if we let this nation fall into the hands of those who have never experienced hard times - then hard times will be what we - as a nation - will experience as a result.
