"Regarding Pat Tillman et al"

http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/breaking_news/8506464.htm?1c http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/?id=110001975 His story before and after his death brings tears to my eyes. The army, and certainly the Marine Corps are exceeding their retention goals. These men and women are realizing that there is more to life than "looking out for number one." The picture is not really as bleak as some would like to show. America is free because of their efforts. If you could spend a week with the fine men and women of today's military, you would never once fear for the future of our country. They may be rough around the edges, but they are some of the hardest working, most respectful duty bound people in the history of this world. I wish everyone could get just a glimpse of this and you would be even prouder of this country than I'm sure you already are. I have told people this for years. This is a drum I will beat forever. I love them all so much. I can't count on both hands and feet how many people I know who are either in Iraq/Afghanistan have been, or are going. I make it a point to call their wives, or family to check on them. I am constantly checking to see if their is anything I can do. I have been blessed since leaving the Marine Corps to be in a healthy financial position. Young officers aren't very well paid, and enlisted men are in far worse shape. I'm not trying to hoist my own flag, but to give you an example of what needs to be done. Let Pat Tillman's sacrifice, and those of others in your name, be a catalyst in your lives. When you see a uniformed member of our armed forces eating out - pay their bill. When you see a soldier traveling in uniform take a second to thank them for what they are doing for you. If you should see one with their family, please approach them and thank him/her, then offer the same thanks for sacrifices made by the family. I can't tell you how much it means to be appreciated. The money might not mean so much to you, but they are paid precious little, and it will mean the world to them. It won't take much time or effort to do these things, but they will mean the world to those young men and women. Make the effort, pay a bill or a kind word. You will be glad you did.
