"Spring observations (warning - sports post)"

Well, I’ve been to the last three scrimmages, and I’m still not sure what to make of our team. I was pleased to see the 1st team defense dominate the action yesterday. During the first series the first team D emasculated the Oline, which culminated in up-downs when the offense came off the field. Stanley McClover is a freak, an is every bit as good (athletically) as the hype. His main problem seems to be the little things that come with experience (i.e. over pursuit, reacting quickly to screens and draws, etc). The first team defense looks like it will be quite good, although there won’t be as much depth (experience wise) this season. Borges’ new offense really seems to be coming along. I think most people will be pleased. We have been running mainly out of two back sets for the most part. I’ve also noticed that the fullbacks are being utilized a lot in the passing schemes (something I had longed to see last year). 95% of the 3+ receiver sets are all variants of the ace formation. Brandon Cox has looked good. Real good. Over the last two scrimmages he is 20 of 22 for 309 yards and 3 TDs. Although he has been going against the 2nd team D, he remains very poised (showing good pocket presence and the ability to scramble and make plays out of the pocket when needed). Just two examples from yesterday. In one play, Cox stepped up in the pocket, escaped pressure, rolled to the left, and lofted a pass over three defenders which Courtney Taylor jumped up to grab for about a 15 yard completion. In another instance, the center snapped the ball over his head, and Cox got back to it and threw it out of bounds (Jason’s inability to grasp the concept that you can throw it out of bounds rather than take a loss has frustrated me to no end). Courtney Taylor is really looking good. Devin and Ben have really stepped it up as well. I didn’t see nearly as many dropped balls this spring as I did during the fall. The guys are going over the middle, taking the hit, and for the most part they are holding onto the ball. There is little that needs to be said about the running backs. Ronnie looks like he has bulked up a good bit. The guy is huge (he has to be 235- 240). The Caddi is the Caddi. Tre Smith has had a great spring. He runs hard, and pound for pound has to be one of the strongest guys on the team. Kenny Irons, Carl Stewart, and Jake Slaughter have all been impressive (esp Irons and Slaughter). All in all, we should have a pretty good team. The lack of depth on defense worries me a bit, and Lord knows we could use a little consistency in the kicking game. By the way, The defense has been wearing orange jerseys during scrimmage. They are worse then you could imagine. It looks like there are a bunch of traffic cones running around on the field.
