"No, historically, the Spanish were the one's under"

(EDITED BY AUTHOR: 3/12/2004 - 9:16 a.m.)

Moslem rule.

Spain was under Moslem rule for centuries. The Moslems were driven out of what is now France by Charles Martel (Charles the Hammer) at the Battle of Tours. The phenomena of French wimpiness is a mid-20th century phenomena. The French Foreign Legion (non-French troops, but led by a 100% French officer corps) was and still is considered one of the best fighting forces in the world. Napoleon was a madman in many ways, but it took the combined efforts of Great Britain, Prussia, Spain and Russia to defeat the Grand Armee under Napoleon. The bottom line for the French is that they, like the rest of Europe were bled white and ravaged during WWI (the western front was almost entirely fought on French soil), and then suffered defeat, occupation and a liberation in WWII. While the rest of Europe began recovering after WWII, the French were struggling with rebellion in their northwest African colonies and in French Indochina---which ended in the disaster at Dien Bien Phu. France has not always displayed the lack of courage it now shows. Spain, while suffering through a civil war in the 1930's, was neutral in WWII and saw no fighting in WW1. Of course, the USA knocked the stuffing out of the Spanish near the turn of the 19th century---which perhaps created the Spanish desire to avoid further international struggles. I do believe that the Spanish will fight like hell now that Al Qaeda has hit them. They definetly will not allow anything close to the Muslim influence that is now being felt in some parts of France.
