"What is the difference between Bono and his "

expletive and the Super Bowl strip tease -- or Howard Stern?
Plenty. In the one case it is a shocking work used to give emphasis, and used by a serious person who is one with gravitas and enormous ethical credibility.
In the other it is a shocking display or desription used to shock or to do an adolescent level drive-by. It is done in this case by persons who have no gravitas and no such ethical credibility.
To distinguish between these acts requires that we say -- One is, while perhaps objectionable to some, acceptable becase the person who brings it has earned the right to be viewed as a serious person. And the other is just a trashy action to get attention and show off done by a childish person who is like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
But our culture does not give powers in charge the right to make such distinctions -- that would not be "fair." The dunce and the scholar must be forced to stand on level ground. The imbecile and the sage must be weighted equally. The man who has earned, by his life, respect, dignity, honor and weight must not be accorded these. He must be placed in the same company with the perpetual juvenile and the rabble whose words and behavior is like clanging pots and pans.
Perhaps less equality is called for.
