"Football is important but not life or death."
|
Greetings! I used to post on this message board under the name "Crimson Kid" and "y2CK" respectfully.
I joined the United States Army on March 1st 2003, and after basic training and AIT was promptly sent to Mosul Iraq to join my Unit attached to the 101st Airborne Divison.
I'am a lifelong football fan. I spent my whole life watching my hometown Freeport Bulldogs on Friday nights, and getting up early the next day to drown myself in college football, particularly my beloved Alabama Crimson Tide. My parents joke about how I could say "whole tide whole" before I could say "daddy" and how they would take me to Freeport games just to keep me happy for the week.
This season, football was very different. The only football I saw was on the highlights of the Armed forces network. For years, I had watched these games in a religious matter. (except I might would miss church, I never missed a footbal game) All of the sudden, it was no longer there. For the first time in my life, I was forced to put football in it's proper place.
And you know what? It's going to stay there. I'll always watch my favorite games on VHS year round, I'll always discuss football 365 days a year with my best friend (an Auburn fan) and anybody else who wants to talk. And Lord willing I won't miss too many games I want to see during the fall. Because football, especially in our neck of the woods is important;
but it's not life or death.
I've learned to enjoy football for what it is. A game. Unfortunatly, nearly 600 solders will never watch a football game again. When you're so far away from your loved ones and you learn about folks you know not making it back from missions it will make you relieze that some of the things You thought were so important, are.
But they're not life and death.
