"A Few Points"
|
(EDITED BY AUTHOR: 2/18/2004 - 6:12 p.m.) 1) I agree that the fuss about a film that most of those doing the fussing have not yet seen is bizarre. I think the fuss has less to do with the film itself than it does the filmmaker.
2) The fuss about the fuss is also strange to me. As I understand, it many Christians are upset about the criticism of the film, particularly whether its content or implications are anti-Semitic. I am not. I live in a land that affords the greatest religious freedom in the world. The Gospels I read do not contain a crdible basis for anti-Semitism or any other type of human hatred. They simply set standards I cannot meet and then offer me something I cannot attain myself. But to say those principles have not been misused in the past for anti-Semitic purposes is a position that is untenable.
3) If the price of religious freedom is an ongoing debate between folks who don't really understand faith and folks who don't really understand how good they have it to be able to practice their faith in this country, then I will pay it.
So, I'm watching 20/20 the other night, and they had that interview with Mel Gibson about "The Passion". And I thought they were really putting the screws to him - commenting about his father, pulling out every doctor of religion in the country, putting the head of the Jewish Defamation League on, etc., etc.. If you go to Yahoo, there are quite a few stories about "The Passion".
And, I can't help but wonder why this is such a big deal.
Think about all the movies that have come out in the last 20 or so years. Then, a guy makes a movie about Jesus and is castigated for it. I don't get it.
