‘Bear’ to Visit Alabama School
Parents Upset After Teacher Tells Children 'Bama's Championships Are Fake
V E R N O N, Ala., Dec. 3— Bear Bryant is coming to town — visiting a West Alabama Elementary School this week after a first grade teacher told her students most of his school's championships didn't exist.
Some parents said they were outraged when their children came home to tell them their teacher at George C. Wallace Elementary School in Vernon, Ala., had informed them Alabama had only won six, not twelve, national championships.
Said Joelle "Meatcleaver" Guchens of her devastated 6½-year-old son: "Just out of the blue he turns to me and tells me that his teacher told him that most of 'Bama's championships aren't real. It just sort of floored me. I almost drove off the road."
Joelle said before when Alabama had yet another losing season, he would tell her, "That's OK, we have more championships than anyone else anyway." She added: "Now it's not that way."
But after a discussion with the teacher, the principal moved to patch things up.
"We made a phone call to the great Jack Daniels factory in the sky and as soon as Coach Bryant heard what happened he decided he would drop everything and make a trip down to Vernon," explained Bubba Donzelli, a community relations specialist for the Lamar Co. School Board.
Now children in the class are expecting a visit from "Bear" this week.
Concluded Jolly upon hearing the news: "Praise be! He's returned from the dead to return the Tide to glory just like we always knew he would!"
