We interrupt our regularly scheduled caterwauling and burning of QB coaches in effigy to bring you this week's game preview. Auburn travels to the city that we at IJR Rants, Schemes & Ploys, LLC call home to take on the Nattering Nabobs of North Avenue, the Georgia Institute of Technology. Yes, it is time to visit an old enemy.
Past Performance Does Not Guarantee Future Results: For those of you just emerging from a coma, the Tigers were mauled last week by the USC Trojans, 23-0. Or was that Nalled? Were the "Fight On" boys from the City of Angels the best defensive team this side of the Steel Curtain? Or were the Tiger play callers auditioning for the role of Scarecrow in the campus production of the Wizard of Oz? Follow the bouncing ball:

Now that my shameless suck up to our fearless webmaster is complete, I will end my recap as follows. Saturday was the biggest ass kicking I have seen since the Cornhuskers came to town in 1982. Let's hope it was because the Trojans are as good as I think they are. Otherwise, my sense of humor will be severely depleted by early October, if not sooner.
From "Flattened" to the Flats: Auburn faces a Yellow Jacket squad diminished by injuries and academic failures. The Not Quite Wasps are smallish on defense and inexperienced on offense with Reggie Ball, a true freshman QB, at the controls. They failed to score an offensive touchdown in their opener against BYU. They will struggle again Saturday against an Auburn defensive unit that was an almost bright spot on an otherwise dreadful August dog day in the opener.
Auburn, despite conflicting coaching comments in the media this week, will run the ball on Tech. The offensive line will regain a measure of pride lost in the previous game. Look for 200+ yards on the ground. I do not expect this game to be close, unless the Tigers turn it over frequently or have special teams breakdowns (note to self: Tech blocked a punt against B.Y.U.; we have that goofy punt formation -- remember to worry).

Historical Notes and Musings: Auburn has won the last nine meetings in this series. Tech has not won since 1978. The last time Auburn played Tech in Atlanta was 1987 ("Tillman! Tillman! Tillman!"). Grant Field had artificial turf, then. The first Auburn game that I clearly remember was the 1968 Tech game at Legion Field in Birmingham (grass, TJ). With Tech leading 21-20 and Auburn driving toward the checkerboard end zone as the game reached its final minutes, Shug Jordan sent John Riley out to try a 3rd down field goal. He missed. Let's hope that bit of history does not repeat itself. Two years later, Tech trekked to Auburn for the first time since the greased railroad track incident to receive a whipping from the Sullivan/Beasley vintage Tigers.
