Why did we give up on the running game by the end of 1st quarter? When you are a power running team you have keep running the ball! You have to keep doing it over and over and try to bang it down their throats. Why did we completely abandon the running game??!! Even when the score was 10-0, I was wondering this. I was wondering why we weren't giving the ball to our best athletes.
In the 2nd and 3rd quarters, here's how many times we ran the ball.
1st drive of the 2nd quarter: once
2nd drive: twice
3rd drive: zero times
1st drive of the 3rd quarter: zero times
2nd drive: zero times
3rd drive: 6 times. Surprise, surprise! This was the only drive in the 2nd and 3rd quarters where we moved the ball at all!
If we had started to throw to our running backs, I would've understood. But we didn't. Between Caddy and Brown they only caught one pass all game for 0 yards. We ran 68 offensive plays and Caddy and Brown only touched the ball 21 times between them. This is totally unacceptable.
I personally believe that our offensive coaches were intimidated by the early success of the USC defense, and they changed their play calling out of fear and got desperate WAY TOO EARLY.
When you are a running team, you have to KEEP running when the game is close. Being down 10 points in the 2nd quarter is NOT a reason to give up on the running game.
Does ANYBODY agree with me? WHY was the ball not in the hands of our best players? Regardless of whether you win or lose, you HAVE to put the football in the hands of Carnell Williams or Ronnie Brown. Regardless of HOW you do this (be it run or pass), you HAVE to do it! You CANNOT let the opposing defense make you take the ball out of the hands of your very best players. This was completely unacceptable!
I love the Hell out of the way our defense played. They took the field like true champs for 4 quarters, but our offensive coaches did NOT put the ball in the hands of our best offensive players. This MUST change if we are going to have a shot at winning the SEC. I EXPECT to see our elite offensive players with the ball in their hands, no matter WHAT the situation is. That did NOT happen tonight! I hope some offensive coach will read this and wake up to where the true talent is on Auburn's offense. We can win the SEC, but we will NOT win it if our coaches continue to call plays the way they did tonight.
Auburn is a DAMN GOOD team! We can win this conference!
