Drafted into the Army in 1954, he served in West Germany and then used the G.I. Bill to pay for business studies at what is now Auburn University. After graduating, he joined Mutual of New York, an insurer. Mr. Scott showed his scorn for the company’s sales methods by burning a stack of its brochures in his backyard.
