My free safety came to the sideline and I told him to stay in the alley and spy the quarterback we would go cloud coverage into the boundary and man the wide side. We had great coverage but by safety was not spying the QB and had dropped about 25 yards deep out of the alley. The QB takes off for about a 45-yard scramble and touchdown. He came back to the sideline where our HC asked him why he wasn't playing spy. He replied, "Man Anderson has got me confused as hell." I got fired on the spot.
I had two guards pull into each other behind the center on an influence trap. the right guard pulled the wrong way he should have influenced out with the tackles picking up the linebacker. When the HC asked what happened the two said that's how we practiced it (we didn't ever practice it that way). I was fired but rehired when we got the ball back.
We got a flag on the sideline for unsportsmanlike conduct when one of our players stood over a player and told him "keep coming over here and I will fook you up again". Flag flies and the player swears it was somebody on the sideline and points. I was the closest person on the sideline on the tackle. The ref walks over to the sideline picks up the flag and drops it at my feet. I had no idea what had happened. I am standing there looking at the ref like what the hell was I too close to the sideline? The ref informs the head coach the penalty is on me and he better not hear a word out of me the rest of the game. I got fired again. I took that one gladly to keep my SS in the game, but I was fired again until the HC didn't know the right coverage scheme for 5 fire and put the fS in a bind and we got scored on.
I was saved by the team once. I was special teams coordinator and scored to pull within 1 late in the half and the OC told me to run the shuffle fake. So I did. It failed. The HC looks down the sideline. I am standing there. he has the stink eye on me. During halftime, I am getting raked over the coals by the HC and he points out stupid coaches losing the game. Second half we come out and rack up 28 unanswered points. The QB who played at Valdosta State stands up and says "There was no way we were going to let coach Anderson Down we believe in you like you believe in us." Job and career probably saved.
