In honor of Auburn-Mississippi State week, I called in and ask Tubs about the legendary asthetically pleasing 3-2 victory over Mississippi State in 2008 A.D.
He laughed, and had to educate his co-host and producer on the game.
Said both teams had good defenses but the offenses were "awful" and called the game "hard to watch".
He contributed Auburn's offensive woes in 2008 to the transition to the spread and said even though the new offensive scheme didn't work in 2008, it was still the right idea as evident by auburn winning the national title two years later with a one back spread attack. He thinks, if anything, the 2008 staff cracked the door for Auburn to go all-the-way with the system the next year.
He said nobody was happy about the game, even though it was a win, except for the offensive coordinator who was just relieved auburn pulled out the W and he probably wouldnt be fired that week.
He mentioned to his co-host that the only points MSU scored was when they sacked "Brandon Cox" in the end zone for a safety. (Apparently that offense was so bad he has blocked the actual starter, Chris Todd, from his memory)
He said this weeks AU-MSU game might be similar to the 2008 season with both teams struggling on offense so much but doubts it will break "his record" of a 3-2 game. (As Hobbes said...6-4?)
Tubs seemed to enjoy the question and his co-host and producer seemed fairly entertained from learning of the iconic 2008 dual in Starkville we have all grown to love,
