Lost my Mother Yesterday, 92 years of a well lived life
Rubie Mooneyham McInnis, 92, joined her husband, William M. "Bill" McInnis, in God's House on June 20, 2017. The two were married for 47 years before he preceded her in death in 2002. Known to her family and friends in west Jefferson County as "Snookie", she was a lifetime resident of Alabama, living in the Birmingham area for 84 years before moving to Enterprise to be closer to family.
Rubie worked for AT&T for 40 years, and while her sons joked that she connected the phone call between Alexander Graham Bell and Mr. Watson, she actually ran a switchboard through World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and all the years in between. When "MA BELL" broke up in 1983, she broke up with it, retired, and she and Bill hit the road traveling.
She is survived by her two sons, William Rae (Carolyn) of Enterprise, AL and Victor Lee (Barbara) of Augusta, GA; six grandchildren, Allison, Chris, Bonnie, Colleen, Lauren, and Kaitlin; her sister, Sammie Mooneyham Vines (Burl) of Hueytown; brother-in-law, Albert "Bert" McInnis (Roberta) of Trussville; many nieces, nephews, cousins, two "just like daughters", and a multitude of friends who will miss her greatly. She was preceded in death not only by Bill, but by a host of relatives and many dear friends. She often said that the drawback to living so long was that she had been to too many funerals.
At 90 she drove herself from Enterprise to Birmingham to visit family and friends. At 91 she attended exercise classes twice a week. Only in her final days did the years catch up with her. A child of the Depression who never owned a computer or Smartphone, she was always proud of both her Eagle Scout, Auburn Graduate sons, their children, and their combined 65+ years of military and civilian service to the country she and Bill taught them to love. She was a long-time member of Oakmont United Methodist Church in Homewood and a beloved member of First United Methodist in Enterprise at the time of her death. She was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers. She will be missed in this world and welcomed in the next. Bill and Rubie are together on the road again.
We miss you both. The family will receive visitors on June 24th at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover from 11:00 AM until 1:00PM with service and internment to follow. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Enterprise at 4:00 PM on Sunday, June 25th with the family receiving visitors starting at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

While my Mother and I didn't always see things from the same perspective, she was an amazing woman. Part of the "Greatest Generation" she worked hard and lived the life most people just talk about. When she and Dad retired they spent the next 15 years on the move traveling five continents and every state in the US. They cruised to Hawaii and drove to Alaska because she didn't like to fly. She got over that when they came to Korea in 1997 with my children from my first marriage to visit me and then at 74 flew with my 76 year old Dad to Australia and New Zealand because "they had never been there." I could write a book about the memories she and my Dad gave my brother and I and a fill a travel guide with all the places they went. She ran the race to the end and when the time came said, "you've got to let me go to be with Jesus." She's there and Dad's had 15 years to plan the next trip. We'll see them both when our own time comes. Rest easy Mother. You done good.
