Let's be precise: we are not talking about a guy who gave himself a fresh(water) moniker and hit on some co-eds or took a woman half his age on a motorbike crash. We are talking about someone who is accused, essentially, of covering up serious, violent felonies in order to maintain his depth chart. Not wanting a guy who would turn a blind eye to rape is not being "prudish." It is meeting the minumum daily requirement for being human in a civilized society. That's assuming the allegations have some merit.
Let's be practical (because it is, after all, a practical world): Assuming the allegations have no merit, Auburn will be hiring someone who has sued BU and numerous of its current officials for libel in federal district court in Texas. If the allegations are unfounded, I would expect Mr. Briles to fight like Hell to clear his name, as I would expect any man or woman unjustly accused to fight like Hell. Any such lawsuit is going to require quite a bit of time and attention from Briles. Anyone who thinks you just hand over the info and docs to your lawyer and the lawyer takes it from there has never been in a big lawsuit. Briles has filed a big lawsuit. There is no way on earth he will be able to devote his full attention to being Auburn's OC next year. Savvy defense lawyers will know just how to invade his time so as to make it as hard as possible for him to do what some coaches already perceive as a 24/7/365 job.
Let's be real: The reality is likely that Briles is accused unjustly of some things and is culpable of others. There is no way Baylor unleashes an outfit like Pepper Hamilton on its athletic department unless there is smoke and fire and all sorts of other unpleasant #badword#. If Auburn hires him, the stink of that #badword# will be on AU, fair or unfair.
It seems like an absolute no-brainer to stay away from Art Briles. So, my guess is that Jay Jacobs has already inked the deal.
