"some perspective from the sideline. confessions of a HS coach"

So we go to centennial HS for our first round playoff game. We are a 9 point dog according to Maxpraps who handicaps rather accurately high school football across the nation.
Early in the game, we have trouble running the ball and before we are in our second series we can hear the fan base calling for our jobs and that the wing T will never win against these spread teams. Never mind the fact that we are 8-2 with a rebuilt team and only 1 starter back on defense. We go down 10 to -0 and the fans are booing the coaches. We return the kickoff for a touchdown right before the half and get a little momentum going.
Come out in the second half and Centennial scores on it's first drive and we go down 16-7. We continue to run the ball getting three or for first downs each time forcing Centennial into bad field position and after two punt exchanges have the ball at the 50. We get two consecutive first downs and then hit a play action pass for a touchdown. At this point we know if we hold again they can't stop us anymore as we have kept their defense on the field all night. After two punt a\exchanges we again have the ball inside the 50. The fans are screaming for us to throw the ball, "You idiots throw the #badword#ing ball" was the exact quote. Instead we stick to the game plan and run the ball down their throat eating up almost the entire clock leaving them only enough time for a big play after holding them inside the 20 after the kick off. They are pulling out all the spread stops and throwing the whole kitchen sink of spread tricks which we easily successfully defended and held on 4th down. We kneeled out the ball and won 21-16.
Now here is the point of all this. People have completely lost perspective on sports. Winning is a product of doing things right. It is not in play calling or schemes. It's in the players who sweat through summer and the weight room and come to practice everyday and when it is over take something out into life that hopefully they can use to make themselves better citizens. That is the coaches job at every level up to the pros; do things right teach your kids more than the game and show them the value of hard work. Winning is just an outcome of ; one genetics ,and, two the hard work of the kids.
So the next time you are screaming at your kids coach remember that guy probably knows more about his team than you do and he may in fact know more about your kid. I literally had to send angry parents away who wanted to know when we were going to help his kid get a scholarship. All in all though I love this job, I love the kids, the great Santini's and helicopter parents don't bother me and Hey its a great day to be a Viking.
