"Auburn-LSU 1994..."

Edited by Author at 9/23/2016 - 11:22 p.m.

I'm 12 years old, deeply rooted in my love for Alabama Crimson Tide football, a love that was sparked by my Grandaddy, a lifelong Alabama fan, and my Uncle, a graduate of UA. Along with their love of Alabama came an angst against Auburn. An intolerence that I didn't quite grasp because throughout my first years as an Alabama fan, I was still sort of in that impressionable stage where the teams Alabama played intrigued me as much as made me dislike them.

It was the first game I had seen Auburn play on TV in over a year due to those illegal steaks or whatever it was that got ya'll banned from TV in 1993. But, I had garnered the misfortune of hearing Nix to Sanders 1 buzz through my mom and dad's retrograding 1989 Sony Stereo System that year. Alabama loosing that game to Auburn, was bad enough. But having to process it only audiably made it difficult to handle this intergallatic tragedy and sparked the most helpless feeling I had ever felt in my life to that point. Which, probably shows how great of a childhood I had, or how early my Bammar self esteem was shaping up. You pick. But the point is, that Iron Bowl was the pivotal point where, by the time my Mom has us tuned in to that cheap Jefferson Pilot coverage of Auburn-LSU early the next year, I was firmly ingrained in the belief that my Pa Pa and Uncle were right...Auburn needed to lose every #badword#ing game they played.

My mom, obviously spoiled by Gene Stallings and Mal Moore's high octaned, trend setting offenses of the early 90's, was rather unimpressed by the defensive struggle which Auburn was finding themselves. So, At the end of the 3rd quarter, She decided it was a good time to go eat lunch. I was happy. Auburn was loosing, and I figured Lester, a die-hard Bama fan, and owner of the resturant, would have the game on anyway, so I could watch Auburn fail and make my life mean a little more that week. We got to the restaurant and Lester immediately told me to come around to the kitchen and watch the game. Unknown to me, Auburn had just pulled within a touchdown with an interception return for a touchdown.

One of the most vivid memories as a young sports fan, is walking to the rear of the kitchen and almost to the moment that my eyes made contact with the screen, the second pick six happening asnd Lester yelling "God Damn! That's the second one!" I knew ol' Lester was pulling for LSU. I heard somebody ask him one time why he liked Alabama and not Auburn. He said, "I'm from Birmingham. Where I'm from, if you like Auburn, the hell with you." (Nuetral territory, indeed.)

But, as another LSU lead was flipped after that astonishing third interception, me and Lester seemed more just flabbergasted about how Auburn won the game than upset that they didn't lose.

Every year since, Auburn-LSU has been on my "must see" College football list. I still think that 1994 game was the craziest ending to a game I have ever seen.
