My first run in with Melvin Owens was in 1982 when a bunch of us managers and a couple of football players were sneaking beer into a concert at BEMC, The drinking age was 19 (I was 22 at the time) and instead of arresting us, he just poured out the beer, told me not to buy beer for the young uns (only two wer under 19 at the time) and asked us didn't we know that beer was illegal on campus, of course we did, cause he knew we weren't stupid. He's fianl words to us, before not arresting us was "Don't make my job hard boys".
Nowadays with drinking age being 21 and thirty some years of MADD, good chance a young cop would have arrested all of us and I would have been charged with supplying alcohol to minors and God knows what else. And headlines would have been "Auburn manger supplies beer to football players."
The upside is maybe they would count the manager arrests in Fulmer Cup standings.
But yeah, it would have been better if we'd all been arrested, cause one of the managers is now a lawyer, another retired from American Airlines after flying jets F-16 in Gulf Wars I & II, one of the football players was in ROTC and went on to be in the NFL HOF, another football player is a lawyer in Mobile,another manager is a MD with a very successful practice etc. etc. Who knows what we would have achieved if we had been taught a proper lesson back then.
