We all know Kevin Green as a football player, a walk on made good, and now the owner of one of the greatest acceptance addresses in Pro Football Hall of Fame history. There are other things about Kevin that aren't as well known. He was commissioned as an Armor Officer when he graduated fom Auburn, having gone through Army ROTC like his older brother. He went to Airborne School at Fort Benning and was proudly wearing his Parachutist wings on Saturday night when he went into the Hall of Fame. He served in the Army Reserves for many years in the off season and his love for those who have worn the uniform of the United States is no act, it is a belief that his father instilled in him and Kieth.
Kieth, the older brother Kevin spoke of so passionately after talking about his father, who was a great Soldier in a tough era, was a 1982 grad of AU and an Army aviator. Kieth was a great guy who still called Kevin his "little brother" when Kevin was an All-Pro linebacker for the Rams. Keith served with distinction and was a man I considered a friend. He was a year behind me at AU and we were both Army Aviators who ran into each other throughout our careers. Unfortunately, Kieth died a few years ago and he wasn't in the family section Saturday night. As I watched Kevin do us all proud, I shed a tear for Kieth, who should have been there to see his little brother's proudest moment.
