Staying at your fleabag of a hotel I am envious.  Princes St Gardens is a great place to sit in the mornings.   Where else are you going?   St. Andrews is nearby -- easy to get there in 45 minutes by train and bus.    Stirling is  @ 30 minutes by train.   Buses in Edinburgh are pretty easy to figure out.  Zoo is a waste of time as is -- IMHO -- Greyfriars Bobby statue.   John Knox house was NOT his actual house.  He is buried under the parking lot outside St. Giles Church.  The basement of the church used to have a good cafe.  If you visit Edinburgh Castle get there in line early.     ==============================
