Last night my other mother died. She slipped away peacefully after a short battle with pneumonia. She was a cancer survivor and an all around super lady. She was born 85 years ago in a two story log cabin that her dad built near the Cumberland gap in the small town of Rose Hill, VA. That's almost as far west as you can go and still be in Virginia. She married her school days sweetheart from nearby Ewing and followed him all over the world after he enlisted in the Air Force. She was the mother to three children and adopted their spouses as if they were her own. She gave birth to my wife while they were in Germany and then chose to settle in Alabama after her husband retired from his first career (I'm sure glad she did!). I will never know why she didn't run my butt off after it was obvious that I loved her daughter, but I'm glad she allowed me to hang around long enough to talk my wife into marrying me. Unless I am mistaken she never criticized me or interfered in any way after I married into the family.
A few years ago she buried her husband and years before that buried one of her sons and all the while I never heard a word of complaint. She may well have been the most even tempered person I've ever met. I will miss her. God bless Becky. Hug your moms. All of them.
