"The North can not be absolved of slavery so easily"
|
Message Replied To ==========
Uh okay in the words of John C Calhoun:
"A large portion of the North perceive slavery to be a sin and percieve it an obligation to abolish it if they felt in any way responsible for its continuation and this doctrine [belief in racial equality] would necesaeily lead to this responsibility... Those who believe that the spirit now abroad in the North will die away if itself without shock or convulsion has formed an inadequate conception of its [abolitionism] character... Abolition and Union cannot co-exist."
And I agree with at least this small portion of his treatise on slavery. Without the Union Armies linking victorious in the viscious hotbed of chattelry and nullification, South Carolina, the South, most likely consisting of four small banana republics without bananas but with slavery, would be in existence today an example of horrific apartheid.
==============================
Northern shipyards built the slave ships. Northern companies ran them. Northern shipyards built the ships that traded the slave picked cotton to Europe, owned by corporations from the North and registered under the flags of northern states. Northern rum was traded for slaves in Africa and the Carribean. Northern taxes were subsidized in part by tariffs on these exports and imports.
The people of the north profited from the hard labor if the southern slaves, even as they wished to hide it from their own day to day sight. Northern trade ENCOURAGED the slave economy. They are culpable as well.
For me? I have no dog in this fight. My family was fighting the Fenian revolt against their British oppressors at the time and did not make it over here until after WWI. The British treated us as poorly as southerners treated African slaves. The British owe me NOTHING 170 years later. It is history and they are welcome to fly the Union Jack with pride for all I care. All that matters is how races are treated TODAY.
